IP67 refers to the protection security level. IP is the abbreviation of Ingress Protection Rating (or International Protection code), which defines the ability of an interface to protect liquid and solid particles. IP is followed by 2 digits, the first is the solid-state protection level, the range is 0-6, which indicates the protection from large particles of foreign matter to dust, respectively; the second is the liquid protection level, the range is 0-8, which indicates that Protection from vertical drops to bottom pressure. Larger numbers indicate stronger capabilities. The explanation of IP67 is to protect against dust inhalation (to prevent contact as a whole, to prevent dust from penetrating); to protect against brief soaking (impregnation). Currently the highest IP68 level in the wiring industry. In addition, industrial connectors have other considerations for harsh environments such as temperature and shock resistance.

First feature

Degree of protection (first digit in code)

Brief description of definition

0 no protection

1 Protection against solid particle objects with a diameter of 50mm or larger or solid objects with a diameter of 50mm

Particulate matter cannot penetrate completely.

2 Prevent the tip of solid particles with a diameter of 12.5mm or more or solid particles with a diameter of 12.5mm from penetrating completely.

3 Protection against solid solid particles with a diameter of 2.5 mm or larger. Tips or solid particles with a diameter of 2.5 mm cannot penetrate at all.

4 The tip of solid solid particles with a diameter of 1mm or larger or solid particles with a diameter of 1mm cannot be penetrated at all.

5 Dust protection: It cannot completely prevent dust from entering, but it will not reach the extent that it hinders the normal operation of the instrument and reduces the safety.

6 Dust suppression: dust cannot enter the entire diameter of the object and cannot exceed the gap of the shell

Second characteristic

Degree of protection (second digit in code)

Brief description of definition

0 no protection;

1 Water drops that prevent vertical drops: Water drops that drop vertically will not cause harmful effects;

2 When the shell is lifted up to 15 °, it prevents water drops from falling vertically: When the shell is lifted at any angle from any side up to 15 °, the water drops falling vertically will not cause harmful effects;

3 Water-resistant fog: spraying on any vertical side at any angle not exceeding 60 ° will not cause harmful effects;

4 Water-proof: Splashing water against the shell from any direction will not cause harmful effects;

5 Water spray prevention: spraying water from any direction against the shell will not cause harmful effects;

6 Prevent strong water spray: strong water spray from any direction against the shell will not cause harmful effects;

7 Prevent short-term immersion: Under normal temperature and pressure, when the shell is temporarily immersed in 1M deep water, it will not cause harmful effects;

8 Prevent continuous immersion: Under the harsh conditions, the manufacturer and the user agree, but continuous immersion in water will not cause harmful effects.

Application and considerations

In industrial applications, IP protection must be considered:

For standard industrial systems in enclosed buildings, IP54 protection = dust protection and splash protection.

IP65 protection is recommended for outdoor systems (cars, etc.). Ash and water spray.

Protection class ≤ IP40 only makes sense if it is touch-proof or only when the system is mounted on a rack (such as a stand).

IP20 should not be used on forklift systems in outdoor warehouses.

Not all systems provide a high level of protection at all. High water resistance usually requires a completely enclosed installation, which usually causes heat dissipation problems. System errors caused by overheating may occur. So additional heat sinks are needed.
